About George Wood

George Wood is a Western Colorado oil painter based in Grand Junction. His work focuses on canyon country, mesas, old trails, ranch life, wildlife, and weathered landmarks of the Colorado Plateau.

He paints in a contemporary Western impressionist style, using strong light, simplified forms, atmospheric distance, and painterly brushwork to capture the character and memory of this region.

His paintings reflect a personal connection to the landscape, from the Book Cliffs and Grand Mesa to Colorado National Monument, De Beque Canyon, Mount Garfield, and the desert country beyond.

He is especially drawn to places that show age, weather, and memory: old junipers on canyon rims, plateaus and mesas, ranch roads, desert trails, and the changing light over Grand Mesa. The goal is not to copy the landscape literally, but to preserve the feeling of Western Colorado as he knows it.
